Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf "Hoodie" Costumes - {Tutorial}

I, seriously, could not bring myself to pay an obscene amount of money on Halloween costumes this year. It seems like it doesn't matter how much I spend, the quality is always lacking and it's just not as cute as I think it should be. So, I decided to make the kids costumes this year. I did a lot of brain picking and web surfing and decided L would be the Big Bad Wolf and E would be Little Red Riding Hood.

Red Riding Hood Costume:
(adapted from the Martha Stewart website)
What you'll need:
Red Hoodie
Brown Yarn (or yellow, red, black, whatever your little ones' hair color is)
Fabric glue or hot glue gun
Red felt or other fabric (2 x 2 feet)
Eyelet trim
Chip clip (you'll see)
Iron on hem tape (optional)
Needle and thread (optional)
Red grosgrain ribbon
Scissors
Measuring tool
String
Fabric marker

1. Start out by gluing or sewing your eyelet trim all the way up the zipper and around the hood.

2. To make the braids, cut three strings of yarn at 3 yards long each. Then, fold them in half and tie a not in the end with the loop on it or tie a piece of yarn around the top, so that you have one bundle of yarn that has 6 strands. It should look like this:

Repeat that twice and then tie them together at the top. Use a chip clip and clamp them down and braid.

Tie a piece of red grosgrain ribbon to secure them at the bottom. This is how I like to tie my ribbon so it makes a nice bow going the right direction. I tie a piece of string around it and stick the ribbon through and then pull it so it's tight. I took pictures of this because it's kind of hard to explain.

Then, just tie as normal, but your bow will be going horizontal instead of vertical, so it looks perfect!

Snip the ends so you have a perfect little trim. Repeat and you will have two super cute little girl braids!

3. Glue the braids to the inside bottom of the hood. I had to put the hoodie on my daughter and then make a mark where I wanted to put the braids.

4. Now, for the cape. You will have to decide how big you want the cape depending on how big your little one is. It will be somewhere around 20-ish inches. No more than, 24 inches probably. My 2-year old daughter was 18 inches. Whatever you decide, cut a square that size. So, I cut an 18 x 18 inch square. Then, to make a compass, tie a piece of string to a fabric marker and hold the string in the corner of the fabric and draw an arc.

Cut it out and then glue your eyelet trim on the long curved side. While that's drying, measure the back of your hoodie where you will be adhering your cape to and figure out how much you will need to snip from the corner of the cape. After you cut, go back and cut it again, but this time curve it out a little. Take a look:

5. Glue the cape to the base of the hood and you're done!

Here comes Little Red Riding Hood!

Big Bad Wolf:

(adapted from the Martha Stewart website)

What you'll need:
Brown Hoodie
Fabric marker
Fabric glue or hot glue gun
Brown, yellow, white, pink, and back felt
Scissors
2 Brown pipe cleaners
Printer and paper

1. Go HERE and HERE and print out the templates on heavy cardstock. Then, cut out and trace the templates on to the coordinating felt color.

2. To make the wolf ears, take a pipe cleaner and fold it so it is 2 1/2 inches on the bottom and 3 1/2 inches on the sides. Twist the ends, to secure. Glue a pipe cleaner to the "back" felt piece and then glue the "front" piece on the front, to make a sandwich. Bend the bottom of the ear inward to create and arc, like an ear.

3. Assemble the eyes and nose, as pictured on the template.

4. Then, glue all the pieces on to the hoodie. I pinched the hoodie together and glued where I was going to place the nose to create a "wrinkled" effect. The gums and teeth go on the inside of the hood. I put the hoodie on L to glue the eyes and ears on so I could see where they should be placed so they looked the best. Then, glue the "claws" on the inside of the sleeves.
Rawr!!

The kids were wearing them all afternoon. So fun!

  5. you did a great job and had more fun doing it. I agree the store bought ones are not as good and cost more. These I am sure they will wear after Halloween.:)

  6. Love the tutu and sparkly shoes on Miss Riding Hood -- all the better to distract that Big Bad Wolf!! I loved making my kids' costumes when they were little -- the closest they had to store-bought was using (and adding to) skeleton and Superman pj's!!
    Great Rednesday!!
