Apple Themed Activities for Kids

So, as some of you might know, yesterday was Johnny Appleseed's Birthday. I got myself super psyched to teach the kiddies about who Johnny Appleseed is and even planned out a whole day centered around him and apples. I started out the day by putting an apple (secretly) inside a brown paper bag and having L slip his hand inside and tell me what he felt. I wrote all the descriptive words he used on a piece of paper and then had him guess what he thought it was. Then, we watched a Disney video on youtube about Johnny Appleseed.

The kids loved it and it sparked a conversation about God and what he provides us with.

Johnny Appleseed Prayer
(Singing)
The Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me
The things I need
The sun, the rain and the apple seed.
The lord is good to me

Then, we read a book called Apples for Everyone. It's a great glimpse in to apples, orchards, and even has a little in there about Johnny Appleseed and it really makes me want to take the kids to our local apple orchard (2 hours away-yikes!).

We also sang a song about Apples:

Found An Apple
Tune: "Clementine"

Found an apple, found an apple,
Found an apple big and round.
It was red and oh, so juicy
When I found it on the ground.

Found an apple, found an apple,
Found it growing on a tree.
Now I'll pick it and I'll share it,
Half for you and half for me.

L and E really enjoyed the whole apple themed day and made me sing the song four times. It was totally cool because I sang it while I prepared our next activity. We made APPLESAUCE! So cool! I used the following recipe and it was insanely easy and yummy! I'm definitely making this again and again and again!

Homemade Simple Applesauce

Ingredients:
4 apples (peeled, sliced, and cored)
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a saucepan and. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher.

The kids had a blast and we saved the rest for their Daddy after he got home from work. We actually ended up eating the rest for dessert after dinner.

I saved our art project for last. It's really easy and super fun!

You'll need:
2 small paper plates
red tempera paint
paintbrush
stapler
glue stick
apple seeds, leaf and stem (cut from construction paper)

Paint the backs of the paper plates red and glue a few apple seeds on the fronts. Allow the plates to dry. Then, staple the plates together, front sides facing, to make an "apple," leaving a small opening at the top for peeking at the seeds inside. Lastly, glue the stem and leaf at the top.

It was an absolutely incredible "Apple Day" and I hope you enjoyed and got some awesome ideas for an apple themed day for your kiddos.
